Gold (XAUUSD) Lot Sizing Explained: Pips, Points, and Contract Sizes in MT5

Why beginner traders blow accounts trading Gold and how to accurately calculate contract units, pip values, and maximum risk on XAUUSD in MetaTrader 5.

Gold (XAUUSD) is the single most volatile instrument in retail trading. It produces massive gains for prop-firm scalpers, but also accounts for more blown accounts than all major Forex pairs combined.

1. The 100-Ounce Contract Size Reality

On most standard brokers, 1.00 lot of XAUUSD represents 100 troy ounces of physical gold. This means a $1.00 move in gold price equals exactly $100 profit or loss per standard lot. If you open 0.50 lots and gold drops $10 from $2,750 to $2,740, your account experiences an immediate -$500 drawdown.

Key Rule: On Gold, $1 price movement equals $10 per 0.10 lot and $1 per 0.01 lot.

2. Pips vs. Points vs. Cents in MT5

Brokers quote Gold with either 2 decimals ($2750.50) or 3 decimals ($2750.505). A 10-cent price movement is 10 pips on 2-decimal brokers, but 100 points on 3-decimal brokers. Confusing points with pips causes beginner traders to calculate their Stop Loss 10x too small.

Key Rule: Always test your lot size calculation using our free browser Lot Calculator before entering live market orders.

3. Calculating Max Safe Lot Size for Prop Challenges

For a $50,000 challenge with a $2,500 daily loss floor, you must never risk more than $350 (0.7%) on a Gold trade. With an average 400-point ($4.00) Gold stop loss, your position size cannot exceed 0.08 lots.

Key Rule: Never trade XAUUSD with discretionary lot sizing; enforce automated pre-calculated limits.
