Decoding Institutional Order Flow: Cumulative Delta vs. Price Divergence

Learn how tick aggression and volume absorption pinpoint when smart money is absorbing retail stop runs at previous session highs and lows.

Price on a candlestick chart tells you where transactions occurred. Order flow delta tells you who initiated them and with what intensity in the MetaTrader 5 order book.

1. The Anatomy of Market Orders vs. Passive Limit Walls

For every aggressive market buyer, there must be a passive limit seller. When retail traders see an explosive green candle piercing previous session highs, they buy at market. However, if institutional desks are sitting with massive passive sell limit orders absorbing that buying power, price cannot push higher.

Key Rule: High positive volume with zero upward price progress is the footprint of institutional absorption.

2. Spotting the Classic Delta Divergence

When price makes a higher high on the chart, but your Cumulative Volume Delta (CVD) makes a prominent lower high, the auction has become exhausted. Smart money has ceased aggressing, and the market is running solely on thin retail momentum.

Key Rule: Fade price swing extensions when cumulative volume delta fails to confirm the high.
